What’s in the box??

As many of you may know, I make exclusive event comics and hand them away at each con I go to. Fanime is no different – except for the part where I actually got to hand them away.

Somewhere in between getting copies printed, taken home, put in the box for the event, and taken to Fanime, the stack of photocopies vanished. I tore the house apart twice, searched my car 3 times, the boxes at the table at Fanime twice, and still couldn’t find the buggers.

So I promised the people who came by that I would post this year’s Fanime exclusive comic to the website.
(then found them under a box that evening).

Hey, look! More content!

So if you haven’t read the announcement at the top, you probably don’t know that the Katgirl and I are at Fanime this weekend, from Friday through Monday. We will be in Artist’s Alley at tables 205 and 206 while the hall is open.

It’s Filler Week!

Something I drew as a piece of background for Rossi, thought I’d put it together and show it to you. Just a bit of something to think about.

I hope George gets there soon, though what with his poor singing, I’m not sure that anyone will really want him to be around.

And who IS this guy…?

Why YES, that IS a character sheet for something you’ve not seen before. Will you see it again? Yes. Soon? Maybe.

NOTABLE NOTES:

1. FANIME is May 22-25. HHFM will be there. I will be there. In fact, I’ll be hosting two panels along with InkTank, Save Hiatus, and Timothy Green!
2. Friday’s (late) comic was a full color, full page monster. Go check it out.

So here’s a little apology for running so late on friday. (if it’s monday and you don’t see a special comic, go back to friday… You won’t be disappointed… I hope.)

Additionally, In lieu of something actually thought provoking and deep, I present:

Aleric’s Take on Star Trek…

In short, I LOVED IT.

The Good:

There are more than enough nods and acknowledgments to the original series that the die-hard fans will have more than a few laughs and chuckles. The cast is (almost) perfectly selected and the writing was (for the most part) phenomenal. Extremely well directed, wonderfully performed with exciting effects that drive the story but also give the film a good visceral feel. All in all, the film was a lot of fun.

The Bad:

The bad guy didn’t get enough air time, which is unfortunate. you get enough out of him to understand where he’s coming from, but the story around him remains hollow. A number of times in the film I was really wondering “what is his motivation? What is he really trying to do here?” Fortunately, the most pressing of the questions are answered, but it was really distracting on occasion.

The Ugly:

The Writers and Director used a relatively classic Star Trek trick to free them from the cannon-driven narrative. They understood that Star Trek fans carry a lot of baggage around with them of what’s “right” and what’s not. While I won’t really get into what they did or how it works, I’ll say that it did a lot to engage the audience: Trekkies (Trekkors?) will more instinctively understand what’s going on with the cannon, and newcomers to the franchise will simply accept the narrative as presented.
