OMG! It’s FRIDAY! I’m at Con-x-treme, handing out a new Con-exclusive comic… a special comic that won’t be available online. If you want it, you’ll just have to drop by, say hello, and grab a copy. I will also have Brand New Ultra-Shiny Hell Has Found Me Buttons for sale there! They are 1.25 inches across, with the fancy pin inside the button metal itself, so it won’t randomly pop off and fall out.
For those who can’t make it to Con-x-treme, I’ll have the buttons up for sale on the website, just not yet.
In other news, I found another article that really ticked me off. This one is about a 9-year-old boy told he’s too good to pitch. It aired on Yahoo! Sports, and I did a little more research about it. Turns out that people are saying that a 40mph pitch is slow for a 9 year old kid. Honestly, I don’t know. My issue is the idea that (regardless of their motivations) ADULTS are telling a 9 YEAR OLD KID he’s too good and has to stop.
WhuTehFuh…?
Seriously, let’s think about this: In an area where parents are worried about their 9 year old children standing on a street corner selling DRUGS, someone’s going to punish them for excellence? What kind of message is this sending these kids?
“If you do too well, you’ll get penalized”. How is that a valuable lesson? I mean, I’m not a parent, so maybe I just don’t “get it”, but it would seem to me that one wants to give children the most positive experience they can have. Now, the argument is obviously “what about the other teams that can’t beat them?” However, I reject that argument: Lords of Kobol forbid someone losing from time to time, especially a kid, since there are valuable lessons in losing as well.
Some reports say that the League is forcing the team to disband because of some back-room deal style financial politics, something about one of the league’s owners/sponsors team being on the 2nd rank spot. If that’s true, then how is THAT a quality lesson?
“Well son, if you can’t beat them legitimately, take them apart using complaints and made-up rules.” Yeah, that’s a great idea. Or maybe, “I know you’re not good enough to beat them son, but don’t worry, your good ol’ dad’s funding the League, so I’ll beat them for you.” Either way, it makes me sick that parents are sending these messages to their kids.
I’ve always found it incredibly amusing how there are so many fantasy franchises where there are technologically adept gnomes that have something going wrong with their tech; Tinkergnomes and WoW Gnomes come immediately to mind. Do you know of any others? Feel free to drop me a line <aleric (at) scottv (dot) com>
Oh yeah… Did I mention? Please remember to VOTE for HHFM, and get a PDQ comic (new one posted Monday)
